Pansies

Peace Light Life

Good morning!

How are you all? Hope you are enjoying the springtime weather! This time of year with the flowers blooming and all the colors popping really is my favorite time of the year! The miracle of life all around us!! Just wanted to share this painting of pansies. Last evening I took the grand babies out and could not help but crack out the paper and paints. I ended up using my fingers my fingers for lack of brushes and I wanted to see what would happen with the paints, how they would flow and the amount of control that I had with them. The above is how they turned out. Pretty satisfying with the color blend and bleeds!

I also wanted to let you all know that I have a painting of Sickman’s Mill in the Steinmetz gallery out in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. It’s a painting that I did a whole year ago with the Lancaster County Art Association with the their plein aire group. Anyway, I hope you enjoy these two paintings, and I hope you’re able to make it out to the Steinmetz gallery sometime this month. This Springtime show lasts until the end of the month and it features a variety of artists. Thank you so much for meeting me here again. Wishing you the best!!

Acrylic Cell Painting

lightpeacelife

Hi everybody,

Here is an acrylic cell painting that I just made a few minutes ago. Tomorrow I’m going to be teaching three classes and it’s all going to be on acrylic cell painting. It is also known as an acrylic pour painting. Basically what you do is you take acrylic paint and mix it to a thinner consistency using some water, floetrol and silicone oil. Kids can mix glue and acrylic paints to get the desired results. It won’t last as long though. I love the silicone oil because it makes the paint disperse and that’s why there are all these really neat flowing cells and patterns. There are so many techniques to use and awesome results.

Hope you have a good week!

Stay tuned for some of the students’ featured artwork!

Elk Neck, Maryland

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.
— Pablo Picasso

Good Monday morning friends,

Right now I am here on the Chesapeake in Elk Neck, Maryland. The sun is coming up and the sky through the trees is a beautiful blend of pinks and purples and blues. Did you know that the sun is made up of many different colors? It is not just white or orange. The cameras we have are not able to pick up the subtle nuances and we would go blind if we actually looked at it.

Anyway, it’s really beautiful here and quiet except for some owls I can hear. I have been working on a rather large painting. It’s a commission piece and hopefully I will be able to share that in a few weeks. The size is  about 4‘ x 3‘-it’s so fun to work on so grand a scale. But in the meantime I would like to share with you some of the sketches I have for a new painting, which would also be large. We, as a family, come down to Elk Neck quite a bit and so I have this idea for a large painting that I’ve been bouncing around in my head of the kids playing along the shoreline. There’s a little cliff here by the bay that I love so much where you can see the white, red and yellow clay deposits along the water. When you climb up into the hillside you can see the bay and the shore. It is a hidden nook surrounded by trees. The kids always bring home little treasures from this area. Stones and bones and little shells. One of them is a little fossil of a bone. Very cool!

If you do get down to Elk Neck, Woody’s Crab shack is our favorite place to eat. If you have a place you like to eat down in Elk Neck or the surrounding area please let me know in the comments below! I hope you enjoy these little updates of what I’m doing and I hope you have a very great and blessed week ahead of you.

Take care,

Holly

The Moon

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.
— Andrew Wyeth

Good morning everyone,

It is soon going to become cold but boy have I been soaking in the sun the last couple of days. It is beautiful out here today!  I just wanted to show you some of the paintings that I’m working on. They are landscape paintings.  It is so peaceful here in Lancaster County, especially down here in the southern end.  It is just absolutely gorgeous. This past fall  I had the opportunity to go to the Brandywine Museum with some of my students and fellow homeschooling moms where they have Andrew Wyeth‘s paintings, one of my favorite artists. He did this one painting of a large moon that comes up over the trees, a beautiful piece. I was out in the field one day and saw the moon at dusk coming up through the trees and it was just one of those sweet, peaceful moments. Wanted to share that with you and hope you have a blessed 2023!

Your Art friend,

Holly❤️

A sketch up in the field on a cold, foggy autumn morning. The soft, muted colors gave way to a different hue as the day progressed. As I stood in the grass the trees started popping from their hiding places.

PS I wrote this a few days ago and the warmth has given way to cooler weather.

Sickman’s Mill

Light is therefore color.
— J.M.F. Turner

Watercolor of Sickman’s Mill.

Hi friends,

This past weekend I dropped off the above painting to the Steinmetz gallery in Strasburg, Pa. The opening reception will be on May 7, 1-4 pm.

Last spring I went with the LCAA plein aire group and sat on the Conestoga creek painting Sickman’s Mill. It was a warm and sunny day; very pretty and pleasant to be sitting outside painting. There was a dappled light that moved as I sat there in the sun and as you know, I love dappled light! Sickman’s Mill is one of the old Lancaster County Mills that is now turned into a bar/restaurant and wedding venue. You can also go tubing on the creek there.

During the summer, I am usually there with friends on Wednesdays. So, if you would like to meet me there come on down! I just got prints made of this watercolor. Below is the button to the store on my website. Click on it to view the print. Hope you all have a great and very blessed week.

Love,

Holly.

Peace and Tranquility

Light, Peace, Life

Hi everyone,

Hope you are enjoying the beginning of summer, with the warm weather and bustling about of nature. I wanted to share this watercolor with you of the Theodore A. Parker III Nature preserve that I painted. We visited this place a few months ago with a group. The path along the creek can be steep, but it is really beautiful! It is the home of Stewart Run, one of the many creeks that are here in Lancaster County. Dappled light and the beauty of the woods really pique my interest. There is a peace and tranquility of mind that envelopes me when I enter into the woods, as though I have entered into sacred ground, I don’t want to make the slightest sound and interrupt the silence of the forest. Hope you enjoy this painting and there will be more to come!

If you have any questions or would like to say hello please comment below. If you are interested in a print please check out the shop section or if you have an idea for a commission piece please contact me.

With warmest regard,

Holly

Art Show In Strasburg!!

Hello All,

Hope this finds you well! Below are two paintings that I painted this summer that are entered into the Lancaster County Arts Association Plein Air Art Show. The show is at the Steinmetz Gallery in Strasburg, PA. Sunday, September 19th is the opening date from 1-4 pm. It will be up until October 14th.

With love,

Holly

P.S. I do plan on being there but have a previous engagement and won’t be able to make it until 2pm. If you are able to visit at that time it would be great to see you!

This View from Little Britain Park. I sat with my mom on a park bench on a muggy July morning talking about various things while the children played with friends. One of the things I love in early American art is the paintings of patchwork farmland. They are so simple and beautiful! This is loosely based on those paintings.

Inner Beauty

Last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.

It’s a timely quote sent by a friend, isn’t it? To close one door is to open another, it has been said. So, how are you doing? It is amazing how things can change in a year-and it’s almost been a year since we last met. Between homeschooling (which I love!) and taking care of my mom (which I also love! She is such a hoot!) my little corner of the world has been busy! But I have carved out time in my day to paint and explore.

It is ashame that the beauty of a flower fades so quickly but it is a wonderful thing to be able to capture it at its height of beauty through the process of art. Our outward beauty may also fade but it’s our inner beauty that glows. What this painting reminds me of and what I like about it is the inner glow of it. The light reflects from a greater source.

Here is an awesome thought I’d like to share with you that I heard recently, let us become superspreaders. Not of any kind of disease, of course, but of love! What a wonderful way to use that word! Until next time, may you enjoy Light, Peace and Life!

Please grab a cup of tea and join me as I paint “Inner Beauty”.

Love,

Your artist friend,

Peaches and Paintings

Hi everyone!
How are you? Hopefully taking care of yourselves. The month of August is always so busy for us! There is a children’s poem that goes ‘Corn and potatoes, beans and tomatoes, our baskets and buckets are filled to the brim.’ And that is what is happening here, loads of food being processed. And the whole family joins in the fun! It is not only fun but the smells are incredible! Right now the basement has the fragrance of peaches. Luckily, the kids love to bake too, so far we have not only had fresh peaches to eat, and jars to fill but one daughter made some peach cobbler and another peach pies. Of course it’s not just one pie, because that wouldn’t go very far!

A basement full of peaches makes it smell wonderful!

Processing tomatoes on possibly the hottest day of the year. We made juice, soup and sauce from these.

So you may be wondering where I get time for painting during the month of August. I keep a ready-to-go bag, filled with supplies. I just take this wherever I go. This month I have just done small paintings, without sketching anything out. Here are a few examples below.

These are all watercolors, started without sketching or practice sketches, with the models sitting in front of me. For the past twenty years I have sketched children, and children do not always make the best models. Yes, they are cute and humorous but they don’t exactly sit still. They are constantly on the move!

I am also working on a few commissions right now, which reminds me- if you would like a painting done as a Christmas gift for someone, now would be the time to contact me. I can work from photos, but recently I had a commission work that I did for someone where I put together several images, just working from my imagination of what it would be like. They just told me what they wanted done, and I did the footwork of finding images. Here are a few commissions that I have done in the past.

Also wanted to share this with you, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has their 150th anniversary this year. Several men started out with an idea, they had no artwork, yet they have one of the best art museums in the world! You can visit their sight below. There are old videos on different installations and their history. It is very interesting. I highly recommend that you visit the Met someday. There is nothing like seeing artwork up front, with all the subtle nuances and details. It is truly a wonderful experience!

If you have any comments or questions I would be happy to answer them or hear from you! Please take care and I will see you next month!

Simple Reminders

Hello All,

I don’t know about you but when I was growing up I always appreciated the simple reminders and reinforcements of truth that hung on the walls of home and school. Now that I am an adult I love to do the same for my children. This month I did something a little different and added Psalm 46:10 to the painting of my son David. It is a very appropriate verse for him and complements the artwork well.

Be Still and Know That I Am God print.

Be Still and Know That I Am God print.

With all the crazy stuff going on in the world today it is even more important than ever to fill your home with truth and things that are positive. This print is 5x9 and comes matted at 9x12. It is on sale from now until Monday 7/20/2020. Click on the link below to check it out. Until next month!

Minnows, Tadpoles and Seeds of Hope

peace • light • life

New Wonders, 6x6, watercolor

New Wonders, 6x6, watercolor

One thing about having children, I love their excitement over simple things. Can you tell what the above painting is of? My one daughter kept thinking it was funny looking flowers, but it’s really a tadpole and a few rocks scooped up in water in one of my other daughter’s hands. Pools of tadpoles were in the water and the kids were extremely excited over them.

I have been experimenting with different types of paper, one of them being hot press. Hot press paper was the paper that I remember being told, was not very good to use and was to be avoided. Not many people like it and I can understand, it is harder to control the paint. But… it picks up detail wonderfully! And some of my paintings have lots of detail-they are infused with detail, especially the smaller paintings of children and scenery.

Hope, 11x14, watercolor

Hope, 11x14, watercolor

The humble dandelion is dying, but there is hope in the seed. It is the only way in which you get the seed, which after floating away on air produces hundreds of more flowers. They do not worry about where they land and are productive in almost whatever soil they come to alight on. Now I know that many of you are thinking, ‘that noxious weed!’, but think about the dandelion. It is humble and happy. It is one of the indicators that spring has sprung. It is what it is. Did you know that it was brought over from Europe as a food and medicinal source? Have you ever tried spring dandelion greens with bacon? It is very good! Even my pickiest of eaters like it!

8x10 watercolor commission.

8x10 watercolor commission.

James Dean, a commission painting. There’s not much to say because the image says it all, right? James Dean, the American Icon of teenage rebellion. James Dean himself did not think of himself as a rebellious youth. He was a great actor. Probably one of the best in his time. Not in many movies because of his untimely death, but he sure made his mark. He brought emotion to the screen and was the first to improvise, an innovative way of acting at the time.

One last thought for you, this has been a tough time for our nation as a whole. Strange times. But there is hope. Our nation really is only as strong as our families are. I guess that is why I paint children and simple reminders of the beauty of life. It really is not that complex, easily forgive, be kind. Sometimes it is easier to treat people we don’t know with kindness, but kindness is what we all need. Especially from those that we are closest too. Ok, those are my closing thoughts. Until next month!

Love,

Holly

Hi everyone,

How have you been? Hope this letter finds you well. We all have family traditions, like to flock to the beach or mountains for vacation, playing games together, Chinese for Christmas. One of our traditions, that was probably started by my mom, is to paint and draw together. My mom has been staying with us so we get to spend a lot of time together and paint in the afternoon. So here I would like to feature a few of my mom’s paintings.

When I was a child my brother and I were models for my mom. I can remember many a time sitting for her while she drew us.

We, here at the Forrest homestead, have been fine thus far. Albeit, a bit antsy and ready to get back to normal. A friend stopped by to drop something off last week and it was sooooo good to see her and her family and to chat awhile. We were made to be social and we need that human contact.

Believe or not, I have been able to make time to paint. I plant myself next to my son while he does his schoolwork. That way I am available to him and the other children as they work. Otherwise, it is rare to see me sitting during the day, as you can imagine. Here are a few of this months watercolors.

On July 3rd, from 5-8pm some of my work will be in the Mulberry Art Gallery’s 2nd Annual We Love Our Pets Art Show in Lancaster City. A few of my children will have their work in the gallery as well. This is as long as Lancaster is open again after being closed due to the coronavirus. Otherwise it will be a digital gallery showing.

A photo my daughter took on one of our many walks.

Hi everyone,

How are you? My hope is that each one of you stays well and that you possess that inner peace, especially during this time of uncertainty. My heart goes out to all those who may be homebound and unable to connect with others. Please drop a note to me and I will definitely get back to you! Many of you may be wondering if we will ever get back to normal and we will. It may be a new normal, like the kind when a new baby enters a home. Nothing after that is ever normal like the normal you knew, it’s a new kind of normal. I write these words as my mom went into the hospital yesterday for something unrelated to the virus. Now is not the time I would like my mom to be in the hospital but in the end I know that everything will be alright and that she is in good hands.

Anyway, I would like to share some of the things I have been working on recently, but, first there is a young lady named Brittany I would like to introduce to you. She is an artist with whom I did an exchange of artwork. This is her artwork and her biography.

Wonderful photography done by Valkyyrii Arts.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a very vivid and (what some may call) an overactive imagination. The earliest piece of art I can recall completing was at four, when I took my mom’s bright red lipstick to a yellow plastic table I had in my room, drawing a spider. I took crayons to walls, markers to skin, paint to my toys. I can safely say my skills have expanded exponentially since my four-year-old self, and in middle school it moved from a simple desire to create to a driven passion for becoming GOOD at my art. At the time, what motivated me was the Japanese animated show, Sailor Moon. My art goal was to become an animator for Sailor Moon, or an artist for Japanese comic books (manga). I practiced all the time, at home, at school, everywhere – this was when I’d began carrying a sketchbook with me all the time. I was self-taught through middle and most of high school - I’d started expanding my skills to still life and collaborating work with some of my artistic friends. In my senior year at high school, I finally took a couple of art elective classes. I’d resisted for a long time because I really didn’t want to be told how to do art – in my mind, art was created out of emotions and could be anything anyone wanted. Subjective.
In college I continued to pursue my art – and knocked heads with most of my professors along the way, as I couldn’t understand at the time that they weren’t telling me necessarily WHAT to create, but more of the skills on HOW to create things or take them to the next level. I’ve always favored the 2-D arts of drawing and painting. My father is a photographer and videographer – growing up with a camera was natural for me and I passed on any photography classes during college, learning everything on my own and from my dad. I found myself intrigued with metalsmithing and jewelry making, which I ended up specializing in for my Bachelor of Fine Arts, Traditional Art. During college, my fanatic passion with Sailor Moon and other anime and manga fell to the wayside. I began to focus my works on creating things from the fantasy/sci-fi, paranormal books I read, and the pagan influences I was drawn towards and becoming deeply passionate about. After college, my work became a combination of my passions, and of completing commissions for others covering a wide range of subjects.
Today, my work is inspired with a wide range of fantasy/sci-fi, paranormal, pagan, Celtic & Baltic art, their cultures, weapon culture, sexuality, kink and tattoo cultures, and equally driven by emotions. I create art from the world around me, photographing things and perspectives I find intriguing, drawing or painting things, people, or animals that cause intense feelings. I create art daily, even if it’s just a simple sketch – not everything has to go up on social media, however it’s incredibly important to be constantly working at what you love to do. I run my art business on the side currently, however my goal is to make the jump and become a full-time working artist. I’m a huge fan and supporter of local artists and small businesses, and actively participate in a variety of communities that align with my artistic passions and interests.“

So here are a few things I have been up to-first of all the kids are home. I love it! Really, I absolutely love having all my little ducklings in the nest. We have been taking long walks and painting together, baking and reading books. I have been going through my old recipe books and consolidating our family’s favorite recipes.

Long walks through the woods are incredibly enjoyable. We have been watching the grass turn green and flowers bloom. The hills make for some good exercise!

First crocuses of the year saying, “Springs is almost here.”

Hey folks,

How are you all hanging in there? I know so much has changed in the last few days. This morning our house is quiet as I plan for a homeschool day with the children. This is not usual, but Friday we got a call that school was cancelled for the next few weeks. Having the children home is awesome!! They are some of the greatest people I know and I am glad to be around them! Anyway, part of the itinerary is painting! I’d be interested in knowing what are you doing today? Not only will we be doing school book work but we will also plant 20 pounds of potatoes. Usually we only do 10, but this year I decided to plant blue potatoes along with the red norlands. The blues we have planted in years past and they do really well in our soil.

Hope you enjoyed this newsletter amid this pandemic. Hope it brought you some peace and joy. Remember our brains can only dwell on one thing at a time. Take the time out today to do something special, plant something in dirt, start reading a new book or finish an old one or draw. You may say you cannot draw but just get a piece of paper and a pencil and observe. That is all drawing is, is observing that which is before you. Take care until next month.
With Love,

Holly

PS I leave you with the lovely quote below from a great folk band. It is about music but can easily be translated to art.

Sacred music, when it’s beautiful, can give us a glimpse into the divine mystery that words can’t quite access. Folk music does something similar. It takes us on a journey into the depths of the human heart. It gives us a window into joys, sorrows, hopes and sufferings of the human experience.

Packing Up

Today I am taking the paintings to the gallery for installation. Here are a few videos and photos before I took everything down to take stock and pack them up for travel.

Hope to see you on Saturday, but if you are not able to make it the show will be up until March 31st. You can stop by during Quarryville library hours to visit.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Holly

PS When I had written this yesterday, I took 40 pieces of artwork total, but when I got to the library it ended up that I had to take out 14 pieces to fit everything on the walls. It looks like I will be able to have a whole other art show!

Nine Days And Counting

Hey folks,

There are just nine days left until the show and I am finishing up some odds and ends. Today I was interviewed by the Chronicle newspaper, so if you live in the Lancaster, PA area keep an eye out for next weeks’ article. I also wanted to share with you some details of the paintings that will be in the show. Details to me are so important. They give the painting their flavor. Anyway, here are some examples…

Hope you are all having a good week! Just wanted to see how you were doing and show you the work I’ve completed and am working on right now. You know how I love sleeping children in the arms of loved ones. The above painting is of my mom holding Charlie, my youngest. If you are planning on going to the opening reception of my art show on February 29th, you will get to meet these two models.

Recently I was reading a book that talks about the choices we make and the time we have, and it made me think about my paintings and how capturing those quiet moments and dwelling on them is soothing to the soul, hopefully for you, as well as myself.

I don’t know about you, but blowing on dandelion seeds is a magical moment that everyone should experience with a small child. Did you do this as a child? I certainly did, much to my mom’s consternation, because those little seeds apparently make more weeds that you have to get rid of.😊

The above painting sat for about 6 months before I was able to complete it. I needed to decide whether to let it be loose and maybe a little abstract, but the personality of that old stone wall is really what I was after.

Hope you enjoy the art work. If you want to let me know what your favorite is please comment below. If you have a photograph that you would like to be turned into a painting, please contact me, I would be happy to do that for you!

How has your week been? I have been off to the doctors for some things, but I have also been matting and framing, which is almost a religious a experience for me. I have gone through all of the paintings that I have made in the last two years and chose the best-the creme de la creme- for the art show at the Quarryville library. Honestly, they have an amazing gallery. When I was first approached about showing there a few years ago, I thought, ‘well it is just a library’, but they do a top-notch job and are very professional with exhibiting art shows.
Anyway, this week I just wanted to show you some behind the scenes of how I frame and get the artwork ready for showing.

Some of these paintings I decided to allow the edges to show because I love the way the colors bleed.

Other paintings are mounted between two pieces of archival cotton matboard.

There are 11 more wooden frames being made by my Amish neighbor and they look like this-
